About the organization

The Closed Eye Open is a literary and arts publication that operates with a quiet, contemplative ethos. Founded on the principle that creative work often emerges from interiority and reflection, it provides a space for poetry, short fiction, and visual art that prioritizes depth over spectacle. Its name signals a deliberate turning away from the noisy, self-promotional tendencies of much contemporary publishing, favoring instead work that rewards slow attention and emotional precision. The journal’s mission is to curate voices that might otherwise be overlooked by mainstream outlets, with a particular interest in the meditative, the strange, and the unassuming.

The Closed Eye Open: Poetry Submissions

Taking part

Before submitting, read at least one full issue to understand the journal’s aesthetic. It favors work that is emotionally resonant, formally restrained, and free of irony or trend-chasing. Poetry submissions should be no more than five poems at a time; simultaneous submissions are acceptable if noted. Cover letters are not required, but a brief note on how your work aligns with the journal’s contemplative spirit is welcome. Response times are typically two to four months. Do not query before that window has passed. The editors value patience and will not respond to aggressive follow-ups.
