About the organization

The Image Centre (formerly the Ryerson Image Centre) was founded in 2012 at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) with a mission to explore the role of photography and related media in contemporary culture. Its founding ethos is rooted in the belief that images are not merely documents but active agents in shaping historical narratives and social discourse. The centre houses the Black Star Collection, a vast archive of photojournalism, and presents exhibitions that range from historical surveys to contemporary critical practices. Through its research fellowships, public programs, and publications, The Image Centre fosters rigorous inquiry into visual culture, bridging academic scholarship and artistic production.

The Image Centre — Research Fellowships

Taking part

Artists and researchers should approach The Image Centre with projects that demonstrate a substantive engagement with photographic archives, visual theory, or the history of the medium. Proposals for exhibitions or fellowships should articulate a clear research question and methodological approach, rather than a general portfolio. It is advisable to reference the centre's collections, particularly the Black Star Collection, and to align with its scholarly mission. Applications are typically reviewed by a committee of curators and academics, so precision and intellectual rigor are valued over promotional language.
