About the organization
Vashon Artist Residency, situated on Vashon Island in Washington State, provides artists with dedicated time and space in a contemplative natural setting. Founded on the belief that retreat from urban pressures fosters creative risk-taking, the residency offers self-directed studio sessions of varying lengths. Its ethos is one of quiet rigor: artists are given autonomy to pursue their work without expectation of finished product, while being part of a supportive cohort that values process over spectacle.

Applicants should present a clear project proposal that demonstrates how uninterrupted time and the island's environment would advance their practice. The selection committee values specificity of intent over polished final outcomes. Work samples should reflect a coherent artistic trajectory, and references should speak to an artist's ability to engage productively in a communal living situation. Deadlines are typically annual; check the website for current cycle details.
