About the organization

Virginia Humanities, founded in 1974 as the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, is a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Its founding ethos is rooted in public scholarship: making the humanities accessible beyond the academy and fostering civic dialogue across the Commonwealth. Through grants, fellowships, and programs, it supports projects that explore Virginia’s history, culture, and contemporary issues, with a particular emphasis on community engagement and diverse voices.

Application guidance

Applicants should first review the specific grant guidelines on the Virginia Humanities website, as priorities and deadlines vary. Proposals must articulate a clear public humanities component—how the project will engage communities and foster dialogue. It is advisable to contact program staff early to discuss eligibility and alignment. Budgets should be realistic and justified, and letters of support from community partners strengthen applications. Avoid academic jargon; write for a general audience. Note that Virginia Humanities primarily funds projects with a Virginia focus, though some initiatives may have broader relevance.
