About the organization

Founded in 2002, Words Without Borders is a pioneering digital magazine dedicated to publishing contemporary international literature in English translation. Its founding ethos was to foster global cultural understanding by making the best writing from around the world available to English-language readers, at a time when translated literature was marginalized in mainstream publishing. The magazine publishes monthly issues featuring fiction, poetry, essays, and graphic narratives from a wide array of languages and regions, often accompanied by contextual introductions by translators or editors. Its core mission is to champion translation as an art form and to expand the literary canon beyond Anglophone borders.

Application guidance

Words Without Borders accepts submissions of translated fiction, poetry, essays, and graphic narratives from any language into English. Submissions must include the original text and a sample of the translation, along with a brief introduction to the work and author. They prefer previously unpublished translations, though exceptions may be made for exceptional work. Simultaneous submissions are accepted if notified promptly. Response times vary, often taking several months due to high volume. Translators are responsible for securing rights; the magazine pays a modest honorarium upon publication. Before submitting, review recent issues to understand their aesthetic range and thematic interests.
