GERHARD KOWALD

Gerhard Kowald is a photographer and mixed-media artist from Graz, Austria, who lives and works in Salzburg. His photographic work often examines structural change in urban peripheries and rural regions, and the social and economic forces that shape people's lives. He was a resident at Björkö Konstnod (BKN) in the Stockholm archipelago in October 2022 and again in October 2023, where he made the photo series 'Encounters on Björkö' and the walking-based video work 'Walking With Locals' as part of the WAP23 program. Kowald trained in painting and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and has taught art, crafts and media, including a media didactics post at the Mozarteum University of Art in Salzburg.
