Maria Kubysh

Maria Kubysh is a Canadian artist who was an artist in residence at DRAWinternational in 2021. She worked there alongside Koji Maekawa and Jaime Knight. Her practice centres on drawing and on how visual images are perceived, especially through touch. Her residency proposal described two drawing series about haptic perception: touchable line drawings and works based on the size of drops and hand palms. Her wider research looked at abstract painters' signature icon alphabets and at pattern recognition in painting. A 2020 painting show at Tapir Kunstraum in Berlin, which the residency page links to this research, dealt with the move from writing and encoding to painting.
