Sungjae Lee
Sungjae (SJ) Lee is a Seoul-born, Chicago-based visual artist, educator, and writer whose work includes performance, installation, text, and video. He focuses on Asian queerness and cross-cultural desire. He holds a BFA from Seoul National University and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During his 2024 residency at the Fire Island Artist Residency, he developed Temporal Chest Hair, a project that collects participants' chest hair to examine desire and labor. A Fag Rag Magazine interview covered this work. The pages do not name the Headlands Center for the Arts residency in any way. His ongoing project Men I Have Ever Met documents queer encounters since 2008 and was exhibited at Co-Prosperity in Chicago in 2024.
