About the press

96th of October Editions is an independent publisher and artist book platform founded in 2016, operating out of a small storefront in Brooklyn, New York. The press emerged from a desire to treat the book as a primary site for artistic and literary experimentation, rather than a secondary document. Its catalogue spans poetry, experimental fiction, and hybrid visual-text works, often produced in close collaboration with artists and designers. The core mission is to foster a community of readers and makers who value the book as a tactile, conceptual object—one that can be as formally adventurous as any gallery installation or performance.

Publishing focus

96th of October Editions concentrates on literary science fiction and fantasy writing and poetry. It is particularly interested in LGBT voices and writing by women. All writing that is concerned with the marvellous, magical, occult, or otherwise extraordinary will be considered.

Before submitting, familiarize yourself with the press's catalogue to understand its aesthetic and conceptual range. They favor projects that engage the book as a medium—consider how text, image, and design interact. Submissions should include a concise proposal, a sample of the work (up to 10 pages), and a brief artist statement. They accept both completed manuscripts and works-in-progress, but prefer a clear vision for the final object. Response times can be slow due to the small team; patience is advised. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but please notify them promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere.

We are actively interested in considering new manuscripts. Please a send a brief paragraph describing the book, and a five page excerpt, pasted into the body of the email. As a matter of policy, we do not open unsolicited attachments. Thank you!
