About the press

Apprentice House Press is a student-run publishing house based at Loyola University Maryland, founded in 2002 as a teaching press where graduate and undergraduate students manage the entire editorial and production process under faculty guidance. Its core mission is twofold: to provide hands-on publishing education for students and to serve as a genuine literary press that champions emerging and underrepresented voices. The press publishes a focused list of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, favoring manuscripts that demonstrate strong craft and a distinctive perspective over commercial trends.

Publishing focus

Apprentice House is the nation’s first entirely student-managed book publisher. Students at Loyola University Maryland are responsible for every aspect of the publishing process, from acquisitions to the design and publication of every book. Its mission is, first and foremost, to educate students about the book publishing process.

Writers should submit only complete manuscripts that have been carefully revised and proofread. Because the press is student-run, response times can be longer than at commercial houses, and submissions are typically read during the academic year. Familiarize yourself with the press's catalog to ensure your work aligns with its literary focus. Include a brief, professional cover letter and a synopsis; simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify the press promptly if your manuscript is placed elsewhere. Patience and adherence to guidelines are appreciated.
