About the press

Between the Highway is an artist-run initiative founded in 2015 in a converted garage in Los Angeles, California. It emerged from a desire to create a sustainable, non-hierarchical platform for emerging artists working across disciplines, with a particular focus on those who engage with the overlooked poetics of suburban and exurban landscapes. The organization operates as a hybrid space—part exhibition venue, part residency, part publisher—and is known for its commitment to long-term relationships with artists rather than one-off presentations. Its core mission is to foster work that is materially and conceptually rigorous, often produced under conditions of constraint, and to disseminate it through accessible channels including print and online archives.

Artists should first familiarize themselves with Between the Highway's past projects and publications, as the organization values contextual fit over sheer volume of applications. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis through the website, but the most successful proposals are those that demonstrate a clear understanding of the space's limitations and possibilities—both physical and conceptual. Include a concise project description, a realistic budget, and documentation of recent work. The selection committee prioritizes work that is in dialogue with the organization's ethos of material inquiry and site-responsiveness. Response times can be slow due to the volunteer-run nature; patience is appreciated. There are no fees to apply, and artists from outside the region are encouraged, though travel and shipping costs are rarely covered.
