About the press

Black Scat Books is an independent press founded in 2012 by artist and writer Norman Conquest, dedicated to publishing unconventional literature and visual art that defies easy categorization. With a focus on absurdist, surreal, and experimental works, the press has carved a niche for itself as a champion of the bizarre and the avant-garde, often blending text and image in innovative ways. Its catalog includes translations, neglected works from the past, and contemporary voices that challenge mainstream literary norms. The press operates with a DIY ethos, producing limited-run editions that are as much art objects as they are books.

Publishing focus

Black Scat Books is a small, independent, not-for-profit press. They are are currently reading submissions to their magazine: TYPO: THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PROTOTYPES dedicated to absurdist fiction, experimental visions, and works in translation. They are particularly interested in translations of works by avant-garde writers.

Black Scat Books accepts submissions of full-length manuscripts, typically between 80 and 120 pages, that align with its aesthetic of absurdism, surrealism, and experimental writing. They are particularly interested in works that incorporate visual elements or defy traditional genre boundaries. Submissions should be sent via email as a PDF or Word document, accompanied by a brief cover letter and author bio. The press has a small staff, so response times can be lengthy; simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify them immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. They do not accept unsolicited poetry collections unless they are part of a larger visual or conceptual project.

Most of the queries we receive come from people who clearly have never read our books nor our journal TYPO. Do not send a query without being familiar with the authors and artists we publish.
