About the press

Blue Light Press is an independent poetry press founded in 1988 by a collective of poets in the San Francisco Bay Area. Established with the ethos of illuminating diverse voices often overlooked by mainstream publishing, the press has maintained a commitment to publishing full-length poetry collections, chapbooks, and the annual Blue Light Poetry Prize. Its catalog reflects a curatorial interest in lyrical accessibility, emotional precision, and the resonant image, favoring work that balances craft with communicative clarity. Over three decades, Blue Light Press has operated as a labor of love, prioritizing authorial care and community over commercial scale, and has become a reliable venue for poets seeking a thoughtful, non-corporate home for their manuscripts.

Publishing focus

Blue Light Press publishes poetry that is imagistic, inventive, emotionally honest, and pushes the language to a deeper level of insight. The editors are all poets, and the books are artistically designed. As a cooperative press, it relies on the poets they publish to actively promote their books, send out review copies, and set up readings at bookstores, universities, and reading series.

Blue Light Press accepts submissions primarily through its annual poetry prize and occasional open reading periods. Poets should consult the website for specific guidelines, as reading periods are limited and often announced via newsletter. Manuscripts should reflect the press's aesthetic: lyrical, accessible, and emotionally resonant. Avoid overly experimental or highly conceptual work. Include a brief cover letter, a table of contents, and a self-addressed stamped envelope if submitting by mail. Simultaneous submissions are typically accepted with immediate notification of acceptance elsewhere. Response times can be slow due to the volunteer nature of the press, so patience is advised. For the contest, follow the theme or judge preferences if announced, and always proofread carefully.
