About the press

Bottom Dog Press, operating alongside its Bird Dog Publishing imprint, is a small, independent literary press rooted in the working-class and Appalachian traditions of the American Midwest. Founded in the late 1970s by Larry Smith and others, the press emerged from a commitment to publishing voices often marginalized by commercial and academic gatekeepers—laborers, regional writers, and poets whose work speaks to the dignity of ordinary life. Over four decades, it has maintained a steady, unpretentious output of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction that values clarity, social engagement, and a sense of place over literary fashion. The press's ethos is one of service to the writer and reader alike: it seeks work that is accessible without being simplistic, and that carries an emotional or political weight without sloganeering. Its catalog reflects a deep respect for the craft of storytelling and the lyric impulse, often foregrounding narratives of work, family, and community. While not a large operation, Bottom Dog Press has cultivated a loyal readership and a reputation for integrity, championing writers who might otherwise go unheard.
