About the press

Broken Tribe Press is an independent publisher and artistic platform founded on the belief that meaningful cultural work often emerges from positions of fracture, dissent, and marginality. Rather than aspiring to a monolithic canon, the press cultivates a deliberately fragmented catalogue—one that brings together poetry, experimental prose, visual texts, and hybrid forms that resist easy categorization. Its ethos is rooted in the conviction that the 'broken tribe' is not a deficit but a generative condition: a community assembled not by shared orthodoxy but by a mutual commitment to risk, formal inquiry, and the unguarded voice. Over time, Broken Tribe Press has positioned itself as a home for work that might be deemed too unruly for mainstream literary channels, yet too considered for mere provocation. The press operates with a small-press intimacy, often prioritizing sustained relationships with authors over one-off transactions, and it treats publication as a collaborative act of editing and design rather than a simple pipeline to distribution.

Publishing focus

Broken Tribe Press was formed to meet the needs of wanderers, misplaced artists, and misfits of the literary world. With a domestic North American focus, Broken Tribe publishes unique literature that pushes boundaries and says something important. The annual MFA Award is awarded to a book each year for author’s who have graduated from an MFA program in the past five years. The North American Series is seeking a book from each state, tribe, and province in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Manuscript submissions

Reading periodJan 1 to Dec 31
Reading feeNo
Response timeGreater than 6 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsNo

Before submitting, spend time with the press's existing catalogue to understand its editorial temperament: it favors work that is formally adventurous, emotionally precise, and resistant to neat resolution. Send a concise, well-edited sample—typically 5–10 pages of poetry or 10–15 pages of prose—along with a brief cover letter that situates your work in relation to the press's interests without over-explaining it. Avoid generic flattery; instead, articulate why this particular press is the right context for your manuscript. Simultaneous submissions are generally acceptable if noted, but be prepared for a slower, more conversational response than you might receive from larger houses. Most importantly, demonstrate that you have read and thought about the press's output—Broken Tribe values authors who see themselves as part of a continuing conversation, not as isolated supplicants.
