About the press

Complicit Press is a small, independent publisher and arts organization that operates at the intersection of experimental writing, visual art, and critical practice. Founded with an ethos of interrogating the politics of participation and the ethics of artistic complicity, the press prioritizes work that questions its own conditions of production and reception. Its catalog often features hybrid texts, artist books, and interdisciplinary projects that resist easy categorization, reflecting a commitment to process over product and to fostering a community of rigorous, self-reflexive makers.

Publishing focus

Complicit Press is a nonprofit publishing imprint of the Execution Intervention Project. It publishes books about the death penalty, death sentences, and executions. It seeks to expose state violence, demand moral reckoning, and amplify silenced voices.

Before submitting, familiarize yourself thoroughly with Complicit Press's existing catalog to understand its aesthetic and political commitments. They favor work that is conceptually sharp, formally inventive, and critically aware of its own framing. Submissions should include a brief cover letter that articulates how your project engages with the press's core concerns, along with a complete manuscript or detailed proposal. Simultaneous submissions are typically accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Response times can be lengthy due to the careful review process; patience is advised.

We seek manuscripts and book proposals about death sentences, executions, and death penalty cases, including research and lived experience. Please email us at [email protected] . We do not want books by justice-involved individuals that are general fiction or poetry.
