About the press

Crisis Chronicles Press is a small, independent poetry press founded in 2008 by John Burroughs, based in Cleveland, Ohio. The press emerged from the vibrant Midwest poetry scene and has since published a wide range of chapbooks, broadsides, and full-length collections, with a particular emphasis on Beat-influenced, experimental, and socially engaged poetry. Its mission is to provide a platform for voices that might otherwise go unheard, fostering a community of writers who value directness, emotional honesty, and formal innovation. Over the years, Crisis Chronicles has maintained a DIY ethos, often producing handmade, limited-edition works that reflect a deep commitment to the materiality of the book as an art object.

Publishing focus

The press is flexible with a broad taste, though most of their books in print are poetry collections.

Writers should familiarize themselves with the press's aesthetic by reading several titles before submitting. Crisis Chronicles favors poetry that is concise, vivid, and emotionally resonant, often with a narrative or confessional bent. Submissions are typically open for chapbook manuscripts (20-40 pages) and full-length collections, with occasional calls for themed anthologies. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify immediately if accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter and a representative sample of 5-10 poems. Response times can vary from a few weeks to several months, so patience is advised. The press values community and often engages with authors through readings and events, so a willingness to participate in promotion is a plus.

Unfortunately, we are not accepting submissions at this time. If all goes well, we may be able to begin accepting new submissions again in 2028. For now, please forgive us if we fail to make the time to respond to unsolicited submissions.
