About the press

FC2 (Fiction Collective Two) is an author-run, not-for-profit publisher of innovative fiction and literature, founded in 1974 by a group of writers including Raymond Federman and Ronald Sukenick. From its inception, FC2 has been dedicated to publishing works that challenge conventional narrative forms and commercial publishing norms, operating as a cooperative where authors have a direct role in editorial decisions. Over five decades, it has become a vital institutional home for experimental, avant-garde, and formally adventurous writing, often championing voices that mainstream presses overlook. Its enduring mission is to foster a literary community that values artistic risk, intellectual rigor, and the radical potential of fiction.

FC2 primarily considers manuscripts through its annual contests, such as the Catherine Doctorow Innovative Fiction Prize, which often waives fees for submissions. Writers should submit full-length manuscripts that demonstrate a commitment to formal experimentation and literary risk-taking. Before submitting, familiarize yourself with FC2's catalog to understand its aesthetic range. While the press is open to unsolicited submissions during contest windows, it is highly selective; ensure your work aligns with FC2's mission of pushing the boundaries of fiction. Keep an eye on their website for specific guidelines and deadlines, and consider that FC2 values work that challenges readers and expands the possibilities of the medium.

Fiction Collective 2 primarily publishes work recommended to us by members of the collective. We do not consider general submissions or have an open reading period. We do, however, run two annual manuscript contests that are open to a wider range of writers. For writers who do not know a current collective member who can recommend their work, these contests are the best way of submitting a manuscript to FC2. The contests run from August 15 to November 1 every year, and do have a reading fee, for which fee waivers are available.
