About the press

Fremantle Press is an independent Australian publishing house based in Fremantle, Western Australia, with a history spanning over four decades. Founded in 1976 as the Fremantle Arts Centre Press, it emerged from a community-driven initiative to support and publish Western Australian voices, particularly those from regional and underrepresented backgrounds. The press has since grown into a nationally recognised publisher while retaining its foundational ethos of fostering local talent and telling stories that might otherwise go unheard. Its core mission is to publish books of high literary and cultural value, with a particular emphasis on Western Australian stories, Indigenous voices, and new and emerging writers. While the press publishes across a range of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, and children's literature, it is especially noted for its poetry list, which has been a cornerstone of its identity and a significant contributor to the Australian literary landscape.

Fremantle Press: Poetry Submissions

Manuscript submissions

Reading periodOpen now

Fremantle Press accepts unsolicited manuscripts in specific categories at designated times, with poetry submissions typically open during a defined window each year. Before submitting, carefully review the current guidelines on their website, as they vary by genre and may include restrictions on length, theme, or author eligibility. The press prioritises Western Australian voices, but also considers work of exceptional merit from elsewhere. For poetry, they seek cohesive collections with a strong sense of voice and place, rather than disparate poems. Include a cover letter that succinctly outlines your publication history (if any), your connection to Western Australia (if applicable), and why your work aligns with the press's mission. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify them immediately if your manuscript is placed elsewhere. Response times can be lengthy due to high volume, so patience is advised. Above all, demonstrate familiarity with the press's list and articulate how your work contributes to its ongoing conversation.
