About the press

Grand River Poetry Press is an independent publisher founded in 2012 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, dedicated to cultivating poetry that engages with the landscapes, histories, and communities of the American Midwest. The press emerged from a reading series that sought to create a space for voices often overlooked by coastal literary centers, and it has since published over forty full-length collections and chapbooks. Its ethos is rooted in editorial care, regional commitment, and a belief that poetry can be both formally rigorous and deeply accessible. The press operates as a nonprofit collective, with a small staff and a rotating editorial board that includes poets, educators, and community organizers. It prioritizes work that demonstrates a strong sense of place, emotional precision, and an openness to experimental forms. While its roots are regional, its catalog reflects a broader conversation, with authors from across the country and beyond who share an investment in the particulars of local life and the possibilities of the lyric.

Publishing focus

Grand River Poetry Press publishes contemporary poetry in book-length collections, with a special interest in work rooted in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, along with formally inventive poems engaging history, place, labor, and the natural world. The editors value clarity of vision, craft, and risk—poems alive on the page and meant to be read aloud in community. They operate as a collective, making equitable arrangements with poets; proceeds fund future titles. They welcome complete manuscripts (typically 60–90 pages) and launch books through a reading series.

Before submitting, read at least two recent titles from the press to understand its aesthetic range. The press accepts full-length manuscripts and chapbooks during open reading periods, typically announced on its website and social media. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work and its relationship to place or community, but avoid over-explaining. Simultaneous submissions are accepted with immediate notification. The editors value poems that are polished but not sterile, and they appreciate a clear sense of the manuscript as a cohesive whole. Response times vary, but queries after three months are welcome.

We celebrate and build community by elevating genuine voices. Reaching the manuscript stage is hard work—and worth celebrating. With a Michigan regional focus, we foster poets who read, learn from, and support one another through craft discussion and thoughtful responses. We operate as a collective, bartering skills to publish books with equitable arrangements for poets; proceeds fund the publication of more titles. Submit a complete poetry manuscript (typically 60–90 pages) with a brief cover letter and short bio. We launch titles through a Grand Rapids reading series and also publish the online journal The River.
