About the press

High Frequency Press is an independent publisher and residency program founded in 2015 by a collective of writers and artists in New York. It emerged from a desire to create a sustainable, non-hierarchical space for experimental writing and interdisciplinary practices, with a focus on works that challenge conventional genre boundaries. The press operates as a hybrid entity: it publishes limited-edition books, broadsides, and ephemera, while also hosting a residency that invites artists and writers to develop projects in a communal setting. Its mission is to foster a community of risk-taking makers, prioritizing process over product and offering a platform for voices often marginalized by mainstream publishing.

Publishing focus

Created as a response to a changing marketplace by publishing industry veterans, High Frequency publishes only the highest quality work—work the editors believe in wholeheartedly—work that bucks the new norm.

Artists and writers interested in High Frequency Press should first familiarize themselves with its catalog and past residency projects to understand its aesthetic and political commitments. Submissions for the press are typically open twice a year, with specific calls announced on the website and social media. The residency application requires a project proposal, work samples, and a statement of intent; there is a modest application fee, but fee waivers are available. Given the press's emphasis on process, applicants are encouraged to articulate how their project would benefit from a communal, experimental environment rather than presenting a fully finished product. Response times can be slow due to the small team, so patience is advised. It is also recommended to engage with the press's events and publications before applying, as demonstrated familiarity with its ethos can strengthen an application.

High Frequency will publish a handful of outstanding and overlooked books in the next few years, including some of our own original work. And we’ll be running full-length manuscript contests: the Skywave Fiction Contest and the Morse Code Poetry Contest. Skywave winners will be published by HF and receive 25 copies and publication plus film and television agent referrals. Morse Code winners will also be published by HF and receive 25 copies; in lieu of agents, they will also get 15 poems published in HF’s Light Speed ePub.
