About the press

Hub City Press, based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was founded in 1995 as a nonprofit literary press affiliated with the Hub City Writers Project. Its founding ethos emerged from a desire to cultivate a vibrant literary community in the American South, publishing works that reflect the region's diversity and complexity while reaching a national audience. Over nearly three decades, the press has grown into a respected independent publisher, known for its commitment to literary excellence and its role as a cultural anchor in the Upstate region. The press operates with a mission to champion underrepresented voices, particularly those from the South, and to foster a love of reading and writing through public programs and educational initiatives.

Hub City Press accepts submissions during specific reading periods, typically announced on its website and social media. Writers should carefully review the guidelines, which often prioritize works with a strong sense of place, particularly the American South, and voices from underrepresented communities. Submit a polished manuscript that aligns with the press's aesthetic—literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that demonstrate originality and craft. Include a compelling cover letter that articulates your connection to the press's mission and your platform. Patience is key; response times can be lengthy due to a small staff. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Above all, familiarize yourself with Hub City's catalog to ensure your work is a good fit.

Hub City is a small press, publishing eight to 10 titles per year. In general, the publication schedule operates at least 18 months in advance of release. It is unlikely that they would publish an author who does not live or have roots in the South. Hub City Press opens one weekend each quarter for unagented submissions. Dates may fluxuate. Visit https://hubcity.submittable.com for submission opportunities, or sign up for the newsletter at hubcity.org to be alerted.
