About the press

MadHat Press is an independent literary publisher founded in 2013 by poet and editor Marc Vincenz. It emerged from the ethos of the international literary journal Mad Hatters' Review, aiming to publish work that is linguistically adventurous, intellectually rigorous, and often overlooked by mainstream commercial presses. The press prioritizes poetry, literary fiction, and essays that challenge conventional narrative and formal boundaries, with a particular interest in translation and cross-cultural exchange. Its catalog reflects a commitment to sustaining a diverse community of writers whose work might otherwise remain in the margins.

Publishing focus

MadHat Press is a leading publisher of unique and vital contemporary poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and criticism. It seeks to foster the work of writers and poets: explosive, lyrical, passionate, deeply wrought voices that stretch the boundaries of language, narrative, and image, as well as vital and enduring literary voices that sing on the page as well as in the mind.

MadHat Press accepts submissions via Submittable during specific reading periods, typically announced on its website and social media. Before submitting, read several titles from the catalog to understand the press's aesthetic range—work that is formally inventive, multilingual, or hybrid is favored. Include a brief cover letter that situates your manuscript within contemporary literary conversations, and avoid generic praise of the press. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Response times can be lengthy (several months), so patience is advised. For translations, include permissions and a note on the original work's significance.
