About the press

NYQ Books is the book publishing arm of the New York Quarterly, a literary magazine founded in 1969 by William Packard and renowned for its focus on the craft of poetry. Building on the magazine's legacy of publishing both established and emerging poets, NYQ Books extends this mission to full-length collections, emphasizing work that demonstrates technical mastery and emotional resonance. The press operates with a commitment to editorial integrity, selecting manuscripts through a competitive reading period rather than relying on agents or commercial trends.

Publishing focus

NYQ Books was established in 2009 as an imprint of the New York Quarterly Foundation, Inc. Its mission is to augment the New York Quarterly poetry magazine by providing an additional venue for poets who are already published there. A lifelong dream of NYQ ’s founding editor, William Packard, NYQ Books has been made possible by both growing foundation support and new technology that was not available during William Packard’s lifetime.

Unsolicited submissionsNo

NYQ Books accepts unsolicited manuscripts during specific reading periods, typically announced on their website and in the New York Quarterly. Poets should submit complete manuscripts that reflect a cohesive vision and polished craft, as the press prioritizes technical skill and originality over platform or prior publication. Simultaneous submissions are generally discouraged, and writers are advised to familiarize themselves with the magazine's aesthetic before submitting. Response times can be lengthy, so patience is essential.

We are not currently accepting unsolicited manuscripts. Right now we limit our reading of manuscripts to those who have previously been selected to appear in the pages of the New York Quarterly magazine, and, on rare occasions, to those recommended to us by editors of other journals. We are trying our best to get the New York Quarterly magazine online and accepting submissions again to allow for more people to be eligible for the books program. But we cannot open it up to unsolicited manuscripts—we would be inundated. Thank you for your understanding and interest in NYQ Books.
