Founded in 1964, Ohio University Press is the oldest scholarly publisher in Ohio and a vital part of the university's academic mission. From its base in Athens, the press has built a distinguished list in African studies, Appalachian studies, literary criticism, and poetry. Its ethos is rooted in scholarly rigor and regional engagement, publishing works that advance knowledge and illuminate overlooked histories. The press is equally committed to literary excellence, as evidenced by the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize, which honors a poet of national stature and supports emerging voices.

For the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize, submit a full-length manuscript of 48–80 pages. The press values work that demonstrates technical mastery and a coherent vision, with a preference for poets who engage with place, history, or personal narrative in ways that resonate beyond the local. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if the manuscript is accepted elsewhere. Include a cover letter with a brief bio and any relevant publications. The press responds within three to four months; queries about status are discouraged unless the stated period has passed.
