About the press

Pile Press is an independent literary and art journal founded in 2015 by a collective of writers and artists in Portland, Oregon. Established as a reaction against the increasingly corporate nature of literary publishing, the journal prioritizes work that is formally adventurous, emotionally honest, and resistant to easy categorization. Each issue is conceived as a cohesive object—a 'pile' of disparate elements that gain meaning through juxtaposition—and is printed in a limited run with an emphasis on tactile, book-as-artifact production values. The journal publishes poetry, short fiction, essays, and visual art, with a particular interest in hybrid and cross-disciplinary work.

Reading periodVaries

Pile Press accepts submissions for both print and online issues, with reading periods announced on their website and social media. They welcome simultaneous submissions but ask that you notify them immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. For print issues, they prefer previously unpublished work; for online, reprints are occasionally considered. Submit up to 5 poems, one short story or essay (under 5,000 words), or up to 5 images. Include a brief cover letter and a third-person bio. Response times vary from 2 to 6 months. They value work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice, attention to language, and a willingness to take risks. Familiarize yourself with past issues before submitting to understand their aesthetic range.
