About the press

Plan B Press is an independent poetry press founded in 2001 by poet and publisher Stevenallen. Based in Alexandria, Virginia, the press emerged from a commitment to publishing work that might otherwise be overlooked by larger commercial and academic presses, with a particular emphasis on accessible, narrative, and formally varied poetry. Over two decades, it has built a catalog of chapbooks and full-length collections that reflect a curatorial interest in direct emotional address, urban and suburban experience, and the small epiphanies of daily life. The press operates with a modest, hands-on ethos: limited print runs, attention to book-as-object design, and a preference for manuscripts that demonstrate clarity of voice over trend-driven experimentation.

Publishing focus

Plan B Press encourages, captures, presents, and preserves contemporary poetry by publishing and presenting emerging poets. They are a small independent publishing company that primarily produces high-quality, limited-run poetry chapbooks. They are venturing into the realm of perfect bound books for the first time, embracing the future.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Plan B Press accepts submissions through periodic reading windows announced on its website and social media. Poets should send a concise cover letter, a brief bio, and a representative sample of 10–15 pages rather than a full manuscript unless specifically requested. The press favors work that is emotionally direct, narratively grounded, and free of excessive irony or theoretical framing. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted with prompt notification of acceptance elsewhere. Response times can range from several weeks to a few months; a polite query after 90 days is appropriate. Because the press is small and volunteer-run, patience and professionalism are appreciated.

Please consider the chapbook as a whole package, not just a collecton of unrelated poems. Please consider the visual side of the book: how the book will be presented. Come with ideas. Please send whole collections, not just two or three poems. We do not publish journals.
