About the press

Saddle Road Press is an independent literary press based in Hilo, Hawai‘i, founded in 2010 by poet and editor Christy Passion. The press takes its name from the Saddle Road (Daniel K. Inouye Highway) that traverses the island's volcanic saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, a route that has historically connected disparate communities. This geographical metaphor informs the press's mission: to publish poetry and prose that navigates the intersections of place, culture, and personal experience, with a particular emphasis on voices from Hawai‘i and the Pacific. Since its inception, Saddle Road Press has maintained a focused catalog of carefully designed books, often featuring cover art by local artists, reflecting a commitment to regional aesthetics and storytelling.

Publishing focus

Saddle Road is looking for reflective, authentic literary voices and originality of language. The press will reopen for submissions in early 2027.

Saddle Road Press accepts submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with a preference for work that engages with Hawai‘i, the Pacific, or themes of place and displacement. Before submitting, read several titles from their catalog to understand their aesthetic. They typically open for submissions in specific reading periods announced on their website and social media; unsolicited manuscripts outside these windows are generally not considered. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work and its connection to the press's mission. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify them immediately if your work is placed elsewhere. Response times can be lengthy (3-6 months), so patience is advised. They do not charge reading fees for most calls, but occasional contests may have a fee.

Please submit only in response to a call for submissions. We do not publish commercial or genre fiction or general nonfiction, YA or children’s books. Please do not query.
