About the press

Sixteen Rivers Press is a nonprofit, collectively run poetry press founded in 1999 by seven San Francisco Bay Area poets. Named for the waterways that define the region, the press operates as a shared-work collective: member poets participate in editorial decisions, production, and promotion, ensuring that publishing remains a collaborative rather than hierarchical endeavor. Its core mission is to publish poetry of place and conscience—work that engages with landscape, community, and the urgent social and environmental questions of our time—while fostering a supportive community of writers.

Publishing focus

Sixteen Rivers Press is a shared-work, nonprofit poetry collective dedicated to providing an alternative publishing avenue for Northern California poets. Founded in 1999 by seven writers, the press is named for the sixteen rivers that flow into the San Francisco Bay.

Sixteen Rivers Press accepts submissions annually, typically during a designated reading period. Prospective authors should submit a full-length poetry manuscript (48–80 pages) that demonstrates a strong sense of place, narrative coherence, and social or environmental engagement. Because the press is collective, writers should be prepared to participate actively in the editorial and production process if accepted. Before submitting, review recent titles to understand the press's aesthetic range, and include a brief cover letter that articulates how your work aligns with the press's mission. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted with notification, but individual poems previously published in journals are fine as long as the collection as a whole is unpublished.

We seek the best in all styles of poetry, and are always seeking to expand our range. Our goal is to publish the best of Northern California writers.
