About the press

Stillwater Story House is a literary and arts organization based in a restored 19th-century boathouse on the St. Croix River. Founded in 2012 by a collective of writers and book artists, it was conceived as a counterpoint to the frenetic residency circuit—a place where slowness, revision, and cross-disciplinary conversation are treated as primary values. The organization hosts seasonal residencies, a small press, and public readings that emphasize work in progress over polished product. Its mission is to provide sustained, unpressured time for writers and artists whose practices engage with narrative, place, and the materiality of the book.

Stillwater Story House accepts submissions for residencies and the press through periodic open calls announced on its website and newsletter. Applicants should demonstrate a genuine need for time and space rather than a desire for prestige; the review committee prioritizes clarity of project intent and evidence of an ongoing practice. Work samples should be recent and relevant to the proposed project. The organization does not charge application fees, but it also does not offer stipends—residents are responsible for travel and a modest materials fee. Response times are typically 3–4 months. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere.
