About the press

Toad Press is a small, independent poetry press founded in 2007 by the poet and translator Colin Frazer. Operating out of Oakland, California, the press is dedicated to publishing short-run chapbooks and full-length collections that prioritize formal inventiveness, linguistic play, and cross-cultural exchange. Its catalogue often features work in translation, as well as English-language poets whose writing resists easy categorization. The press maintains a deliberately modest scale, producing a handful of titles each year with an emphasis on careful design and affordable access. Toad Press has become a quiet but respected presence in the contemporary poetry landscape, known for its commitment to work that is intellectually curious and aesthetically adventurous.

Publishing focus

The Toad Press International Chapbook Series publishes contemporary, exciting, beautiful, odd, and avant-garde chapbook-length translations of poetry and prose.

Toad Press accepts submissions only during announced reading periods, typically posted on its blog. Do not send unsolicited manuscripts outside these windows. When open, the press asks for a brief cover letter, a 10–15 page sample of your poetry or translation, and a self-addressed stamped envelope if you require a response by mail. Electronic submissions are preferred via email, with files in .doc or .pdf format. The editors are drawn to work that takes risks with language, form, or translation, and they appreciate a clear sense of your project’s scope. Response times can be slow—expect several months. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify immediately if your work is placed elsewhere.

We publish translations only. Please take a look at our current publications (and consider purchasing one or more of our books) before submitting.
