Founded in 1975 at Wake Forest University, the press is dedicated to publishing the finest Irish poetry and literary works, with a particular emphasis on contemporary poets from Ireland and Northern Ireland. Its founding ethos was to introduce American readers to the richness of Irish poetry, and it has since become a vital transatlantic bridge for poets such as Medbh McGuckian, Paul Muldoon, and Ciaran Carson. The press maintains a focused list that balances established voices with emerging talents, often publishing collected editions and translations that deepen the appreciation of Irish literary culture.
Publishing focus
Wake Forest University Press only publishes Irish poetry from Irish (not Irish American) poets. The editors regret they cannot consider other poets’ work. If you are an Irish poet currently living in the U.S. or elsewhere, please feel free to send a query by email.
The press primarily publishes Irish poets, including those from Northern Ireland, and rarely considers work outside this scope. Poets should submit a cover letter, a brief bio, and a representative sample of 10–15 pages of poetry. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if accepted elsewhere. Response times can be lengthy (3–6 months), so patience is advised. Unsolicited manuscripts are welcome, but ensure your work aligns with the press’s Irish focus. For translations, include the original text and permissions. Electronic submissions are preferred via the website’s guidelines.
