About the press

Wendy’s Subway is a non-profit reading room, writing space, and meeting place in Brooklyn, New York, founded in 2013 by a group of writers and artists. It emerged from a desire to create a sustained, non-commercial environment for experimental and critical writing practices, where reading and conversation are treated as vital forms of cultural production. The organization hosts residencies, public programs, and publications, with a particular emphasis on supporting emerging and underrepresented voices in contemporary literature and art. Its ethos is rooted in generosity, experimentation, and the belief that writing is a social act—one that benefits from time, space, and a community of peers.

Wendy’s Subway typically announces open calls for residencies and submissions on its website and through its newsletter. Artists and writers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the organization’s past programs and publications to understand its aesthetic and political commitments. Proposals should demonstrate a clear sense of how the residency or opportunity would support the development of a specific project or writing practice, rather than a general desire for space. Given the organization’s emphasis on community and process, applicants should articulate how their work engages with or contributes to a broader conversation. It is advisable to submit only when a call is open, and to follow guidelines closely; unsolicited submissions are generally not accepted.
