About the residency

A4 Residency Art Center is an independent, non-profit arts organization based in Chengdu, China, with a global reach. Founded in 2014 by a collective of artists and curators, it emerged from a desire to create a sustainable, process-oriented alternative to the commercial gallery and museum circuits. The residency program supports emerging and mid-career artists, curators, and writers from around the world, offering dedicated time and space for research, experimentation, and production. A4's ethos is rooted in critical dialogue, cross-cultural exchange, and a commitment to artistic risk-taking, without the pressure of immediate outcomes.

Planning your application

Artists should approach A4 with a clear, well-articulated project proposal that demonstrates a need for time, space, and critical feedback rather than merely a desire to exhibit. The selection committee values proposals that are open-ended and research-driven, with a willingness to engage in dialogue and community activities. Applications are typically accepted through an annual open call; ensure your materials are concise, your intentions honest, and your timeline realistic. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with A4's past residents and programming to assess alignment with your practice.
