About the residency

The Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council) operates one of Europe's most comprehensive municipal cultural programmes, with a particular emphasis on visual arts, literature, and interdisciplinary practice. Its residency initiatives, administered through the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB) and venues such as Fabra i Coats: Centre de Creació, reflect a longstanding commitment to sustaining artists at critical moments in their careers. The programme is rooted in the belief that public institutions should provide the material conditions—time, space, and a modest stipend—for research and production, rather than spectacle. Over decades, this approach has made Barcelona a vital node for artists working across the Mediterranean and beyond, balancing local rootedness with international dialogue.

Planning your application

Applicants should approach the call as a project proposal rather than a portfolio competition. The selection committees—typically composed of independent curators, artists, and institutional representatives—prioritise clarity of intent, feasibility within the residency period, and a demonstrable need for the specific resources offered (studio space, access to Barcelona's networks, and production support). Avoid generic statements about 'exploring' themes; instead, articulate what you will make, why this context matters, and how the residency will advance your practice. The application is in Catalan and Spanish, with English versions often available; ensure your materials are professionally translated if needed. Deadlines are strict, and late or incomplete submissions are not considered. It is advisable to visit Fabra i Coats or attend an information session if possible, as familiarity with the space and its history can strengthen a proposal. Finally, note that the programme values projects that engage with the city's social and cultural fabric, not merely those that use Barcelona as a backdrop.
