About the residency

The American Composers Forum (ACF) was founded in 1973 as the Minnesota Composers Forum by a group of composers seeking to create a support network for their peers. Over five decades, it has grown into a national organization dedicated to advancing the art of music by connecting composers with performers, presenters, and audiences. ACF's core mission is to support composers at all stages of their careers, fostering a vibrant and inclusive new music community through grants, residencies, commissions, and professional development programs. Its ethos is rooted in the belief that composers are essential to cultural life and that their work deserves sustained investment and advocacy.

Planning your application

Artists should approach ACF with a clear understanding of its mission and program offerings. Applications are typically judged on artistic merit, feasibility, and alignment with the specific goals of each opportunity. It is advisable to review past recipients and program guidelines carefully, and to articulate how the proposed work or project contributes to the broader new music field. ACF values authenticity and community engagement, so demonstrating a thoughtful connection to audiences or collaborators can strengthen a proposal.
