About the residency

Blue Mountain Center is a residency program located in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, founded in 1981 by the philanthropist and civil rights activist Ruth Mott. From its inception, the Center has been dedicated to providing artists, writers, and activists with uninterrupted time and space to advance their work in a serene, natural setting. The ethos of the Center is rooted in a commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and the belief that creative and intellectual labor thrives in a supportive, communal environment. Residencies are offered without cost to participants, covering room, board, and studio space, reflecting the Center's mission to make such opportunities accessible to a diverse range of voices.

Planning your application

Applications are accepted through an online portal, typically with a deadline in early winter for the following year's residencies. The selection process is competitive, with a focus on the quality of the proposed project and its alignment with the Center's mission. Applicants should articulate how their work engages with social, environmental, or cultural concerns, and how a residency would contribute to its development. The Center values clarity and authenticity over polished presentation. It is advisable to apply well before the deadline and to ensure that all required materials—work samples, references, and a project description—are thoughtfully prepared. Residencies are generally four weeks long, and applicants should specify their preferred dates.
