About the residency
Founded in 2025, Bylis Whispers is an independent non-profit cultural organisation based in Hekal, southern Albania. Taking its name and inspiration from the ancient city of Bylis and the surrounding Vjosa River valley, the association was established to promote culture, literature, heritage, and community participation as drivers of sustainable rural development. Its core mission is to create meaningful exchange between local communities and international artists, writers, researchers, and cultural practitioners, while strengthening cultural life in rural areas and fostering a renewed sense of local ownership over cultural heritage. The Bylis Whispers Artist in Residence programme is an interdisciplinary residency that welcomes artists, writers, photographers, musicians, performers, and researchers seeking time and space for artistic practice. Emphasising artistic research, reflection, and exchange over production alone, residencies typically last one to three weeks, with longer stays possible by arrangement. Residents are invited to engage with the community through informal presentations, workshops, conversations, or readings, but remain free to develop their own creative work. The programme is part of a broader ecosystem that includes the Bylis Community Library, the Humans of Bylis photography project, and various literary, cultural, and educational initiatives for children and young people.

Planning your application
Artists, writers, researchers, and cultural practitioners from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. The residency values process, research, and exchange over finished production, so proposals should articulate how time and space in Hekal would support your practice and how you might engage with the local community. While not required, a clear idea for a community offering—such as a workshop, reading, or informal presentation—is welcomed. Applications are typically open to international applicants, and residencies last one to three weeks. It is advisable to check the website for current call details, deadlines, and any specific application requirements. Given the rural setting, applicants should be prepared for a slower pace and a deep immersion in the landscape and local culture.
