About the residency

The Canada Council for the Arts is Canada's national public arts funder, established in 1957 by an Act of Parliament. Its founding ethos was to foster and promote the arts across Canada, ensuring that artists and arts organizations have the resources to create, experiment, and share their work with Canadians and the world. Over six decades, it has evolved into a cornerstone of the country's cultural infrastructure, distributing hundreds of millions of dollars annually through grants, prizes, and initiatives that span all disciplines—from visual arts and literature to music, theatre, and dance. The Council's core mission is to support the creation and production of art, to promote the arts in Canada and abroad, and to provide leadership in the arts sector. It operates at arm's length from government, making funding decisions through peer assessment committees composed of artists and arts professionals, which ensures that its curatorial demeanor remains artist-centered and responsive to the evolving needs of the cultural community.

Planning your application

Approach the Canada Council with a clear, well-researched project that aligns with its current funding priorities, which are detailed on its website. Carefully review the specific program guidelines and eligibility criteria; each grant has distinct requirements for artistic merit, feasibility, and impact. Your application should articulate the artistic vision, the work's significance in your practice and field, and a realistic budget. Since assessment is by peer committees, write for informed but non-specialist artists: avoid jargon and explain your process. Pay attention to the Council's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; demonstrate how your project or practice engages with these values where relevant. Deadlines are strict, and the application portal can be intricate, so start early and seek feedback from past recipients. Remember that the Council funds a vast range of activities, from creation and production to travel and residencies, so identify the most fitting program rather than forcing your project into a mismatched category.
