About the residency

Casa Na Ilha is an international artist residency and cultural organization situated on the Atlantic coast of Brazil, near the historic town of Paraty. Founded in the early 2010s, it emerged from a desire to foster meaningful cross-cultural exchange and to provide artists with the time, space, and critical distance necessary for deep work. The residency operates on the principle that immersion in a distinct natural and cultural environment—the intersection of the Atlantic Forest and the sea—can catalyze new ways of thinking and making. Its core mission is to support artists at all stages of their careers by offering uninterrupted studio time, opportunities for dialogue with peers and local communities, and a framework that encourages experimentation and risk-taking without the pressures of the commercial art world.

Planning your application

Artists should approach Casa Na Ilha with a clear sense of what they hope to accomplish during a residency, but remain open to the unpredictable. The selection committee looks for applicants whose work demonstrates a rigorous engagement with their chosen medium and a willingness to engage with the local environment and community. Proposals that are overly prescriptive or that treat the residency as a production facility are less likely to resonate. Instead, articulate how the specific context of the Atlantic Forest and Brazilian coastal culture might inform your practice. Applications are typically accepted on a rolling basis or through periodic open calls; check the website for current opportunities. Include a concise artist statement, a portfolio of recent work, and a project proposal that balances specificity with flexibility. International applicants should be prepared to cover travel costs, though some scholarships may be available.
