About the residency

The Center for Book Arts, founded in 1974 and located in New York City, is the first and oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of the book. Its mission is to promote and advance the book as a vital contemporary art form through exhibitions, classes, residencies, and public programs. The Center provides a space where traditional bookbinding, letterpress printing, and papermaking intersect with experimental and conceptual practices, fostering a community of artists, scholars, and enthusiasts.

Planning your application

Artists applying to the Book Artists-in-Residence program should demonstrate a clear and compelling artistic vision that engages with the book as a medium. The selection committee values technical proficiency, conceptual depth, and a willingness to experiment. Proposals should articulate how the residency would advance the artist's practice and contribute to the broader dialogue around book arts. It is advisable to review past resident projects and the Center's exhibition history to align your proposal with the institution's ethos. Ensure all application materials are meticulously prepared, as attention to detail is paramount in this field.
