About the residency

Central Washington Family Residency (CWFR) is a nonprofit artist residency program located in Ellensburg, Washington, that supports artists and writers who are also primary caregivers. Founded in 2018 by a collective of artists and educators, the residency emerged from a recognition that traditional residency models often exclude those with dependent care responsibilities. CWFR provides two- to four-week residencies in a rural setting, offering private studio space, shared living accommodations, and a modest stipend. The program is designed to be family-friendly, with options for artists to bring their children or dependents, and it emphasizes community engagement through potluck dinners, open studios, and informal critiques. The residency does not charge application or participation fees, reflecting its commitment to accessibility and equity in the arts.

Planning your application

Applicants should submit a concise artist statement, a project proposal that outlines how the residency would support their practice, and a clear explanation of their caregiving responsibilities and needs. The selection committee values authenticity and feasibility over polished presentation. Work samples should demonstrate a committed practice, but there is no expectation of a specific medium or career stage. It is advisable to apply well before the deadline, as the program receives a growing number of applications. CWFR encourages applicants to communicate any accessibility requirements early in the process.
