About the residency

Chalk Hill Artist Residency is an independent, non-profit residency program situated on a working farm in Healdsburg, California. Founded in 2014 by artists for artists, it provides uninterrupted time and space for creative work across disciplines, with a particular emphasis on projects that engage with the environment, community, and the rhythms of agricultural life. The residency operates on the belief that meaningful art-making benefits from immersion in a slower, more attentive pace, and that the cross-pollination of ideas among artists from diverse backgrounds enriches both the work and the wider cultural landscape. The program offers residencies of two to four weeks, during which artists are given private studio space, accommodation, and meals, all without cost. Residents are encouraged to interact with the farm's daily operations, though there is no requirement to do so. The ethos is one of gentle rigor: artists are expected to pursue their own work with seriousness, while also participating in optional community dinners and informal critiques. The residency does not prescribe outcomes, but rather fosters an atmosphere where experimentation and reflection are valued over production.

Planning your application

Artists should apply through the residency's website during open call periods, which typically occur annually. Applications require a project proposal, work samples, and a statement of intent. The selection committee looks for clarity of purpose and a genuine fit with the residency's ethos of reflection and interdisciplinary exchange. It is advisable to articulate how the farm environment might inform your practice, though projects need not be explicitly agricultural. Given the limited number of spots, applicants are encouraged to apply early and to ensure their materials are concise and well-organized. There is no application fee, but late or incomplete submissions are not considered.
