About the residency

The Commonwealth Foundation is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1966 to support civil society across the Commonwealth. Its grants programme funds projects that promote participatory governance, human rights, and cultural expression. While not exclusively an arts funder, it has a significant track record of supporting cultural initiatives that advance social change, particularly in Commonwealth countries. The foundation's ethos is rooted in the belief that citizen participation is essential for democratic development, and its cultural funding often intersects with themes of identity, heritage, and social justice.

Planning your application

Artists and cultural organisations should approach the Commonwealth Foundation with projects that explicitly link cultural practice to participatory governance, human rights, or social justice. The foundation prioritises initiatives that are led by or deeply engage marginalised communities. Before applying, carefully review the current grants call to ensure your project aligns with the foundation's thematic focus and geographic scope. Applications should articulate a clear theory of change and demonstrate how the project will contribute to long-term systemic impact. Budgets should be realistic and justified, and partnerships with local civil society organisations are often advantageous. Note that the foundation does not fund individuals directly for artistic production; grants are typically made to registered organisations.
