About the residency

The Court of Cavalum is an international artist residency program hosted at Casa de Mono, a historic estate in the Andalusian countryside. Founded in 2015 by a collective of artists and curators, it was conceived as a counterpoint to the accelerated pace of the contemporary art world—a place where sustained attention and material experimentation are prioritized over production and networking. The residency operates without a fixed thematic agenda, instead offering residents the time, space, and critical community necessary to develop work on their own terms. Its mission is to foster a culture of deep inquiry, where artists can engage with their practice in a supportive, non-hierarchical environment.

Planning your application

Applications are reviewed by a rotating panel of past residents and invited curators. The selection process prioritizes clarity of intent and a genuine need for the residency's specific conditions—time, solitude, and critical exchange—over polished proposals. Artists should articulate what they hope to explore or unsettle in their practice, rather than what they plan to produce. The residency does not provide studio assistants or fabrication support; it is best suited to those whose work is self-directed and materially self-sufficient. While there is no fee to apply, residents are responsible for travel and a modest materials stipend. The program is particularly open to practices that are durational, research-based, or otherwise ill-fitting within commercial gallery timelines.
