About the residency

Dorland Mountain Arts is a nonprofit artists' colony and nature sanctuary located in the Temecula Valley of Southern California. Founded in 1979 by artists Ellen and Robert Dorland, it was conceived as a retreat where creative work could flourish in dialogue with the surrounding chaparral and oak woodlands. After a devastating wildfire in 1993, the colony was rebuilt and continues to offer residencies to artists, writers, composers, and other creative practitioners. Its core mission is to provide uninterrupted time and space for focused work, free from the distractions of daily life, within a community of peers.

Planning your application

Applications are typically accepted through an online portal, with deadlines announced on the website and social media. Artists from all disciplines are encouraged to apply, though the residency is best suited to those whose work can be pursued independently. The selection committee looks for a clear project proposal and evidence of a serious creative practice, but there is no requirement for finished work. Given the remote location, applicants should be prepared for limited cell service and a rustic, communal living environment. It is advisable to apply well before the deadline and to tailor your proposal to the unique opportunities for solitude and nature immersion that Dorland offers.
