About the residency

Ettijahat. Independent Culture. is a non-profit cultural organization founded in 2011 in response to the Syrian uprising, with the aim of supporting independent artistic and cultural production in Syria and the Arab region. Initially focused on Syria, it has expanded its scope to address the broader Arab region, particularly in contexts of displacement and exile. The organization operates with a commitment to freedom of expression, cultural diversity, and the belief that art can play a vital role in social change and resilience. Its programs include grants, residencies, mobility support, and capacity-building initiatives for artists and cultural operators. One of its flagship programs is Zad, which facilitates the mobility of artists from the Arab region residing in Europe, enabling them to connect with European cultural scenes and develop their practices. Ettijahat also runs other initiatives such as the 'Spaces' program for cultural spaces, and 'Tawasul' for networking. The organization is known for its flexible, responsive approach, adapting to the evolving needs of artists in volatile contexts. It emphasizes long-term support rather than one-off grants, and often works in partnership with local and international cultural institutions.

Planning your application

Artists interested in Ettijahat's programs should regularly check their website and social media for open calls, as deadlines and eligibility criteria vary. The application process is typically competitive, requiring a clear project proposal, budget, and artist CV. It is advisable to demonstrate how the project aligns with Ettijahat's mission of independent cultural production and social impact. For mobility programs like Zad, applicants must be from the Arab region and residing in Europe. Ensure all documents are in Arabic or English, and adhere strictly to guidelines. Building a relationship with Ettijahat through attending their events or connecting with alumni can provide valuable insights. Given the organization's focus on long-term engagement, artists are encouraged to think beyond a single grant and consider how their work contributes to the broader cultural ecosystem.
