About the residency

Listagil, the Gil Society, is an artist-run residency and exhibition space in Akureyri, North Iceland, founded in 2008 by a collective of local and international artists. It occupies a former fish-processing facility, a setting that informs its ethos of resourcefulness and site-responsive practice. The residency invites artists to engage with the town's social and geographic context, offering time and space for research and production without the pressure of a fixed outcome. Its core mission is to support experimental and process-oriented work, with a particular openness to practices that are durational, contextual, or collaborative.

Planning your application

Applications are typically accepted once a year via an open call, with deadlines announced on the website and social media. Proposals should clearly articulate a research interest or project direction, but need not promise a finished work. The selection committee favors specificity of intent over polished presentation. Include a concise artist statement, CV, and a brief description of how the residency would benefit your practice. International applicants are welcome; note that travel to Akureyri requires a domestic flight or a scenic drive from Reykjavík. Budget for materials and living costs, as the residency provides studio space and accommodation but limited production funds.
