About the residency

Founded in 1934 by Mary Hambidge, the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences is one of the oldest artist residency programs in the United States. Situated on 600 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Rabun County, Georgia, it was established as a retreat where artists could live and work in a community that values solitude, experimentation, and cross-disciplinary exchange. The Center's mission is to provide time, space, and resources for creative individuals to advance their practice, with a particular emphasis on supporting work that engages with the natural environment and the rhythms of rural life.

Planning your application

Applications are accepted through the Hambidge website and are reviewed by a panel of professionals in relevant disciplines. The selection process prioritizes clarity of purpose and the potential for the residency to meaningfully impact the proposed project. Artists should articulate how the time and environment at Hambidge will contribute to their work, avoiding generic statements. The application typically requires a project description, work samples, and references. Deadlines are firm, and early preparation is advised. Residencies are offered in spring and fall sessions, with durations of two to six weeks. Financial aid is available, and applicants are encouraged to apply for support if needed.
