About the residency

Hangar – Center of Artistic Research is a non-profit artist residency and production centre based in Lisbon, Portugal. Founded in 2010, it occupies a former industrial hangar in the Graça neighbourhood, providing studios, technical support, and a public programme for artists working across visual arts, music, performance, and new media. Its ethos is rooted in process over product, encouraging experimentation and cross-disciplinary dialogue without the pressure of a final exhibition. The centre operates as a flexible platform where local and international artists can develop projects in an atmosphere of critical engagement and mutual support.

Planning your application

Applicants should approach Hangar with a clear sense of what they want to explore or develop during the residency, rather than a finished project. The selection committee looks for genuine curiosity and a willingness to engage with the centre's communal environment. Proposals that demonstrate an openness to dialogue and experimentation are favoured over those that are overly polished or commercial. It is advisable to research past residents and the centre's public programme to understand its tone. For music and sound calls, a concise statement of intent and work samples that reflect process and risk-taking are more compelling than a list of past achievements.
